In 2016, Ofsted marked the school as "Requires Improvement". Previously a foundation school administered by Havering London Borough Council, in April 2017 Marshalls Park School converted to academy status and was renamed Marshalls Park Academy. The school has a strong link with Havering Sixth Form College in which a majority of its students go on to attend. The School's Headteacher is Mrs Nicola Jethwa, who took on the role of Acting Headteacher but later became the Headteacher. Abbs Cross school was opened in 1958 as a mixed Technical High School, and was enlarged in 1973.
In 2013, it was the only school in Havering to receive an 'Outstanding' report from Ofsted, in the terms of Achievement of pupils, Quality of teaching, Behaviour & safety of pupils as well as Leadership & Management, while other nearby schools such as Coopers' Company and Coborn School and Gaynes School only managed to get a 'Good' report.
