Daniel David Murphy (born July 12, 1962, in Duluth, Minnesota) is an American musician best known as a co-founder [1] lead guitarist for the alternative rock band, Soul Asylum from 1981 to 2012. He is also a member of Golden Smog .
Soul Asylum is an American rock band formed in 1981 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.Their 1993 hit "Runaway Train" won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.The band was originally called Loud Fast Rules, with a lineup consisting of Dave Pirner, Dan Murphy, Karl Mueller, and Pat Morley. [1]
Pirner was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin [4] and graduated from Minneapolis West High School in 1982. [5] He taught himself how to play the drums. By age 20, Pirner started his career drumming with a punk band called Loud Fast Rules as part of the Minneapolis scene, together with Karl Mueller (bass) and Dan Murphy (guitar).
The band's next album, Delayed Reaction (2012), received positive reviews and it entered the US album charts, but founding member Dan Murphy left the group at the end of the year. [1] Soul Asylum released their eleventh album, Change of Fortune , in 2016 and their twelfth album, Hurry Up and Wait , in 2020.
Golden Smog reunited on July 12, 2019 to play a small "surprise" performance celebrating Dan Murphy's 57th birthday. [2] The show marked Murphy's first public musical performance since his retirement from Soul Asylum in 2012.
