The Bhatner Fort was built by son of Rao Bhati, [1] about 419 km northwest of Jaipur along the old Multan-Delhi route and 230 km north-east of Bikaner. Another name of Hanumangarh was uBhatner, which means "fortress of the Bhati". Believed to be 1700 years old, it is considered to be one of the oldest forts of India. [2]
Hanumangarh was the kingdom of Bhati Rajputs and hence its earlier name was Bhatner. Maharaja Surat Singh Rathore (b.1787 – d.1828) of Bikaner State won this fort on Tuesday. Since Tuesday is the auspicious day of the Hindu deity Hanuman , Surat Singh renamed Bhatner to "Hanumangarh" - the Fort of Hanuman the Hindu-deity.
