The White River Fauna are fossil animals found in the White River Group of South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska in the United States.In southwest South Dakota and northwest Nebraska, these fossils are characteristic of the White River Badlands (including Badlands National Park), though they can be found far beyond the limits of the White River watershed.

The fossilized animals date from the Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, and Pliocene epochs of the Cenozoic Era. They are found in the Chadron Formation, Brule Formation, and/or the Arikaree Formation of South Dakota, Nebraska, and/or Wyoming.
Today, fossil jaws and teeth of the Oreodonta are commonly found amid the 'Oreodon beds' (White River Fauna) of the White River badlands in South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming. Many oreodont bones have also been reported at the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Oregon.
The formation was named by N. H. Darton "for the Brule Indians, who once roamed over Pine Rldge Ind. Res. in southern S. Dak., where the fm. covers large areas, and that it is not present in Brule Ind. Res., which occurs farther NE In S. Dak." Darton's first description stated, "The White River beds In their extension from S. Dak. Into Nebr. present some differences in strat. range and relations.
