MC4 connectors are successors of the MC3 Connectors, which were developed by Multi-Contact in 1996. MC3 is the abbreviation of Multi-Contact and its size 3mm PV connector with 3 mm contact pin. MC3 had certification ratings of (1000VIEC/600V UL) and 30A (10AWG PV Cable). The MC3 connectors were discontinued in 2016.

PV connectors MC3: Old-style Weatherproof DC connectors. MC3 connectors are a fully discontinued type of single-contact connector commonly used for connecting solar panels . MC3 are named for the original manufacturer Multi-Contact (now part of Stäubli Electrical Connectors ) with a 3 mm contact assembly pin. [ 1 ]

[4] [8] The 7-pin connector uses all 7 pins on newer trailers according to the ISO standard. [9] [10] On older trailers there's sometimes a 5-wire setup using a 7-pin connector.
The pilot pin is located in the centre of main contact circle on 4- and 5-pin connectors. On 3-pin (2P+E) connectors, it is located on the contact circle opposite the ground pin. The other connectors are located 105° on either side of the earth pin, rather than 120° as in the smaller variants, to make room for the pilot pin.
