Hervey Bay (/ ˈ h ɑːr v i /) [4] is a city on the coast of the Fraser Coast Region of Queensland, Australia. [5] The city is situated approximately 290 kilometres (180 mi) or 3½ hours' highway drive north of the state capital, Brisbane.
European settlement at Hervey Bay began with the establishment of the pastoral run Dalgaroom (16,000 acres (6,500 ha)) in the mid-1850s, and timber-getting commenced in the district in the mid-1860s. Dalgaroom run was reduced to 14,000 acres (5,700 ha) and renamed Toogoom, which was later resumed and surveyed as farming portions from 1870. [ 2 ]
In the Government Gazette in 1867, Portmaster, GP Heath described how the lights operated together in order to guide vessels through Hervey Bay: [1] When entering Hervey's Bay, steer so as to pass one or two miles of the Fairway Buoy, until the two lights on Woody Island are visible, and a brought into line.
