Sitka Sedge State Natural Area (Sitka Sedge) is an estuary and beach on the north coast of the U.S. state of Oregon in Tillamook County.Sitka Sedge consists of 357 acres (144 ha) of tidal marsh, mudflats, dunes, forested wetlands, and uplands at the south end of the Sand Lake estuary, north of Tierra Del Mar.
During the 1940s and 1950s, workers planted European beach grass, shore pine, and Scotch broom to stabilize the dunes—a process that took an additional twenty years. The park opened in 1972. The Oregon Dunes are the largest coastal sand dunes in North America, covering around 7,000 acres (28 km 2) of a 40 miles (64 km) stretch of the Oregon Coast. Formed by thousands of years of wind and waves, the dunes offer off-road vehicle use, hiking, camping, and birdwatching.
Although the lake is saltier than most other coastal lakes in Oregon, it is also more transparent. [2] About 2 miles (3 km) of the lakeshore borders Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, and about 1 mile (1.6 km) borders Honeyman State Park. The rest borders private property, including vacation homes and girl scout Camp Cleawox. [2]
