The Elora Gorge is a popular tourist attraction located at the western edge of Elora, Ontario, Canada, which is 25 km north from the city of Guelph. Elora Gorge Conservation Area is one of many conservation areas owned by the Grand River Conservation Authority .
The Credit Valley Railway reached the area in 1879 and built a station at the Forks of the Credit as well as a timber trestle spanning the Credit River. The primary purpose was shipping Credit Valley sandstone to other communities in Ontario, particularly Toronto and Hamilton, where the product was used in the construction of large buildings such as Queen's Park and the original Toronto City Hall.
One of Elora's many tourist attractions, the gorge also has the architecturally significant David St. Bridge; it was saved from destruction by active citizens. An explorers' map in 1669 showed the River as being called the Tinaatuoa or Riviere Rapide. A 1775 map shows it as Urse, a name which also appeared on a 1708 map and on Bellin’s Carte des Lacs of 1744. This gorge is included within both Grand Portage State Park in Cook County, Minnesota, and Pigeon River Provincial Park (9.49 km 2) across the border in Thunder Bay District, Ontario. Its lower course also forms the northern boundary of the Grand Portage Indian Reservation.

He opened a brewery at Salem in 1857 or 1858, which was eventually taken over by Conrad Doerbecker in 1865. A German-born professional brewer, Doerbecker may have previously operated the brewery for Tamblyn. Doerbecker produced lighter, lager-style beers which competed with the English-style ales produced by the brewery in Elora. [7]
