The line was electrified in 1989, between Leeds & Wakefield Westgate, as part of the programme to electrify the East Coast Main Line. [2] [3] The service connects Leeds and Wakefield with Sheffield and Doncaster with the section of the line between Leeds and Doncaster forming part of the East Coast Main Line. [4]
The Wakefield line features local trains to both Doncaster and Sheffield plus East Coast Main Line, Midland Main Line and Cross Country Route expresses. The first station on the site was opened on 17 July 1871 as Tanshelf, being renamed Pontefract Tanshelf on 1 December 1936. The Pontefract line is one of the rail services in the West Yorkshire Metro area of northern England. The service is operated by Northern, and links Wakefield and Leeds with Goole via Pontefract. The Metro timetable for the line also includes services operated as the Dearne Valley line between York and Sheffield via Pontefract.

Pontefract Monkhill railway station is the busiest station in the market town of Pontefract in West Yorkshire, England. The station is on the Pontefract Line managed by Northern but is also served by Grand Central and is 14 miles (23 km) south east of Leeds. The other stations in the town are Pontefract Tanshelf and Pontefract Baghill.
The service connects Ilkley with Leeds and Bradford, and is operated by Northern Trains. [1] West Yorkshire Metrocards are available for use on the line, covering Zones 3–5. [ 2 ] The line is served predominantly by four-coach Class 333 electric multiple units as well as some three-coach Class 331 EMUs.
