That trail begins at Ohiopyle State Park to the southwest and reaches Conemaugh Gorge near Johnstown. [3] All of that trail's overnight shelter areas are within the grounds of the state park. Uniquely among Pennsylvania hiking trails, that trail is protected as a linear state park, coordinated by personnel at Laurel Ridge State Park. [1]
It is 2.8 miles in length and marked by an inverted blue "T". The trail is located on the west side of the mountain and begins by following a ridge that abuts the main dome of the mountain. On this trail you may see mountain laurel which is the Pennsylvania State Flower. When the mountain laurel blooms in June it makes for a very scenic hike.
Chestnut Ridge rises in southern Indiana County and continues to the south-southwest for approximately 75 miles. The ridge crosses Westmoreland County and Fayette County into West Virginia then gradually disappears into a series of hills and finally ends roughly 5 miles (8.0 km) southeast of Morgantown, West Virginia.
