It is 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) from the end of the Tasman Glacier and 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) south of Aoraki / Mount Cook's summit. Franz Josef (officially Franz Josef / Waiau) is a small town in the West Coast region of the South Island of New Zealand. Whataroa is 32 kilometres (20 mi) to the north-east, and the township of Fox Glacier is 23 kilometres (14 mi) to the south-west.
