James Burton was born on 22 September 1784 to Oliver Burton and Ann Wilcock in Ingleton, North Yorkshire. [6] He married Alice Hartley (1788–1840) on 23 July 1807 [7] and became managing partner at the ‘then celebrated’ Thompson, Chippendale & Co., Calico printers, Primrose Hill, Clitheroe.
