The Chirundu Petrified Forest is an area of fossil trees 21 km west of Chirundu, lying just south of the road from Chrundu to Kafue near the junction with the road to Siavonga. It is a listed National Monument of Zambia. [2] [3] On the Zimbabwe side the township is also called Chirundu. [4]
Before 2012, Chirundu was part of Siavonga District in the Southern Province of Zambia.Then, President Michael Sata decided in 2012 to create the Chirundu District (which consequentially led to the Chirundu Constituency being created for the next general election), effectively declaring that Chirundu will have its own town council administration (no-longer under Siavonga).
The village on the other side of the border is also named Chirundu. Seventeen km (11 mi) before Chirundu, the T2 meets the northern terminus of the M15 road, which is the road that provides access to the tourist town of Siavonga on the Zambezi River adjacent to the Kariba Dam and a border connecting to the town of Kariba on the Zimbabwean side. The Kafue Flats lie mostly within the province's northern border with Central Province. In the north-west lies part of the famous Kafue National Park, the largest in Zambia.
