Mifepristone, and also known by its developmental code name RU-486, is a drug typically used in combination with misoprostol to bring about a medical abortion during pregnancy. [8] This combination is 97% effective [ 9 ] during the first 63 days (9 weeks) of pregnancy , yet effective in the second trimester as well.

The New York-based Danco Laboratories, which makes mifepristone, said the U.S. Supreme Court decision on Thursday “safeguards access to a drug that has decades of safe and effective use.”
The mifepristone-misoprostol combination is, by far, the most recommended drug regimen for medical abortions, but other drug combinations are available. Misoprostol alone, without mifepristone, may be used in some circumstances for medical abortion, and has even been demonstrated to be successful in the second trimester. [ 37 ]
