The Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge situated along the shore of Ninigret Pond. [2] It is characterized by salt marshes , kettle ponds , freshwater wetlands , maritime shrub lands, and forests, and it is seasonally inhabited by over 250 species of birds.
According to information compiled by the Rhode Island Sea Grant program, Ninigret Pond's watershed covers 7,645.65 acres (3,094.08 ha), of which 5,820.79 acres (2,355.59 ha) is occupied by water; Ninigret Pond itself has a surface area of 1,580.38 acres (639.56 ha), while other, smaller bodies of water account for the other 244.48 acres (98.94 ha).
It is located in the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge in Charlestown, Rhode Island midway along the coast line between Westerly and Point Judith. It is named after Edwin "Frosty" Drew. The main instrument is a PlaneWave CDK600 24" Corrected Dall-Kirkham telescope which was installed in October, 2021.
In 1904, the General Assembly appropriated $5000 for construction of a permanent breachway that would help the pond from becoming brackish and unsuitable for cultivating oysters. Colonel Rodman of the Rhode Island Engineers Office surveyed the site and proposed building jetties on either side of the breachway.

East Beach or East State Beach is a seaside public recreation area on Quonochontaug Neck, the narrow barrier island that separates Block Island Sound and Ninigret Pond, in the town of Charlestown, Rhode Island, United States. The state beach encompasses three miles (4.8 km) of oceanfront and abuts Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge. [2] [3]
Ninigret (also known as Juanemo according to Roger Williams) (c. 1610 [1]-1677 [2]) was a sachem of the eastern Niantic Indian tribe in New England at the time of colonization, based in Rhode Island. In 1637, he allied with the colonists and the Narragansetts against the Pequot Indians.
