The Barleycorn (also written as The Barley Corn) was an Irish traditional music and rebel music band. The band, consisting of Paddy McGuigan, Liam Tiernan, Brian McCormick and John Delaney, was formed in mid-1971 in Belfast. Other musicians joined over the years, while some of the original members left.

In the song, he suffers indignities, attacks, and death that correspond to the various stages of barley cultivation, such as reaping and malting .

In the recording sessions, Wood introduced the 17th-century traditional song "John Barleycorn" to the band after hearing it on The Watersons album Frost and Fire.
