Basketball England (BE, formally England Basketball) [2] (formerly known as the Amateur Basketball Association) is the governing body of the sport of basketball for England including 3x3 basketball. The organisation operates the English Basketball League for both men and women, as well as the England national team .
English Basketball was progressing very well indeed and by including "Catford Saints" as the English team (1939 Championship Winners) in the Liège Festival that year, the ABBA once more made England's position in European Basketball felt. It is unfortunate for the progress of Basketball that World War II started in the latter part of 1939.
The National Basketball League, or NBL for short, is a league competition representing semi-professional and amateur basketball clubs from England and Wales. It forms levels 2 to 5 on the British basketball pyramid, in line with the Scottish Basketball Championship , sitting directly below the top tier competition, Super League Basketball .
The England national basketball team is organised by Basketball England, the sport's governing body in England. England's direct membership of FIBA ended in September 2016, when its national teams were merged into Great Britain teams, so England no longer play in FIBA competitions. [ 1 ]
The current governing body for the Great Britain team was formed by the national federations of England (Basketball England), Scotland (Basketballscotland), and Wales (Basketball Wales) on 1 December 2006. [2] Prior to the merger, England, Scotland, and Wales competed independently during international play except for Olympic events.
