The Minor Basilica of St. Anne (Malay: Basilika Minor St. Anne, Tamil: புனித அன்னமாள் தேவாலயம், Punitha annamaal Tēvālayam) is a Roman Catholic church in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Malaysia. It is one of the parishes in the Diocese of Penang.
The Basilica di San Nicola da Tolentino was the first minor basilica to be canonically created, in 1783. The 1917 Code of Canon Law officially recognised churches using the title of basilica from immemorial custom as having such a right to the title of minor basilica. Such churches are referred to as immemorial basilicas. [2]
The granite megalith is located at the foot of Bukit Mertajam, within the compound of the St Anne Church. [2] The inscriptions were believed to be in pre-Pallava script and written in Sanskrit. They were attributed to the ancient Kingdom of Kadaaram, which flourished in northern Malaysia in the 5th to 6th centuries.
Built in 1888, St. Anne's Church is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Bukit Mertajam. [7] It is one of the parishes of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Penang . Every year, the church hosts one of the largest Novena festivals in Southeast Asia , attracting about 100,000 visitors.
The Minor Basilica of St. Anne at Bukit Mertajam plays host to the annual Novena feast, which draws thousands of pilgrims from abroad. [110] The 'Street of Harmony' at Seberang Jaya has nine places of worship, each representing a different faith, and is a tribute to religious diversity within the township. [111]
