The highway was extended from Lubbock to the New Mexico state line in 1963. Between 1974 and 1994, US 82 was re-routed from Whitesboro to Honey Grove; the old routing became SH 56. The highway sees slightly more development along its route, interchanging with State Highway 56. Between SH 56 and US 82, FM 1417 runs near many housing developments on the city's westside. North of US 82 the highway briefly enters Denison, running just east of North Texas Regional Airport and Grayson County College.
The highway merges back into one street, just before SH 11 before leaving Sherman. SH 56 runs through a generally undeveloped area of Grayson County before entering Bells, where the highway meets US 69. Between Bells and Savoy, SH 56 enters Fannin County. State Highway 5 (SH 5) runs along the old route of U.S. Highway 75 at Howe into the city of Allen. SH 5 parallels US 75 along its length and runs alongside the former Houston and Texas Central rail line. SH 5 was created in 1959 when the new route of US 75 was established to the west.
