The Royal Observatory, Greenwich (ROG; [1] known as the Old Royal Observatory from 1957 to 1998, when the working Royal Greenwich Observatory, RGO, temporarily moved south from Greenwich to Herstmonceux) is an observatory situated on a hill in Greenwich Park in south east London, overlooking the River Thames to the north.
The name was changed from the Greenwich Reading Room and Library Association to the Greenwich Library in 1907. [7] The library received funding from donations and a matched endowment from Milbank Anderson up until 1917, after which it was funded through a combination of private donations and public funding from taxpayers. [8]
It is in The Pepys Building near to the Cutty Sark within the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College (formerly Greenwich Hospital); the building began life as an engineering laboratory for the college. The centre opened in March 2010, and admission is free. The Centre explains the history of Greenwich as a royal residence and a maritime centre.

The director oversaw the move of the Royal Greenwich Observatory from Herstmonceux to Cambridge in 1990, and continued in charge until the observatory was closed by the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council in 1998. The post expired with the institution.
