The first generation XP10 series Vitz was designed by Sotiris Kovos [9] at Toyota's ED2 studio in Europe. [10] It was first unveiled at the 1998 Paris Motor Show.Production began in late 1998, [11] with a Japanese on-sale date of January 1999; European sales commenced two months later as the "Toyota Yaris". It is powered with a 1.0-liter K10C Dualjet engine which is a reworked K10B engine with dual fuel injectors per cylinder (Dual VVT) and several other modifications. In January 2023, the third-generation Celerio was introduced in South Africa and some other RHD Southern Africa markets under the Toyota brand as the Toyota Vitz.
The K110 was Toyota's first belt-type CVT and production began in August 2000. Toyota said that the transmission was both fuel-efficient and offered high driving performance. The Toyota Platz (Japanese:トヨタ・プラッツ, Toyota Purattsu) is a subcompact car that was manufactured in Japan by Toyota from 1999 until 2005, when it was replaced by the Belta. Designated by Toyota as the XP10 series, the Platz was also sold in export markets as either the Toyota Yaris or Toyota Echo .
