By 1853, the school changed its name from the Oblate School for Colored Girls to the Saint Frances School for Colored Girls, named after St. Frances of Rome (1384–1440). The title was later shortened to the Saint Frances Academy. [6] In 1871, the school moved to its current location in inner East Baltimore at 501 East Chase Street.
In 1999, the Dioceses High School Task Force found room for expansion in the Gainesville area, and so St. Francis Catholic High School opened on August 16, 2004, to serve the growing population. In 2016, St. Francis dropped the "high school" moniker and changed its name to Saint Francis Catholic Academy. [2]

Eventually a middle school program, St. Francis Academy, was added. This program currently serves students in the 7th and 8th grade. Until 2002 the school maintained a High School program, but this is no longer open. Since 2012, the school has been undergoing a series of upgrades and renovations to its physical facilities.

A group of six Brothers, soon arrived and opened St. Francis Monastery and St. Francis Academy (now the site of St. Francis College), the first Catholic school in Brooklyn. The monastery served as the base of operations for the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn as they spread out over the City of Brooklyn in their ministry of education.
