In 1980 the Club began a new activity, or more accurately, revived an old one, the Turtle Derby. The Turtle Derby was first held in 1931 at the Johns Hopkins Hospital when Colonel Frisby, the hospital doorman, kept several box turtles in what was called Frisby Farms. The idea occurred to race the turtles, and the Turtle Derby came into being.
One of the founders of the Club was Alfred Jenkins Shriver, a member of the Johns Hopkins Class of 1891, for whom Shriver Hall is named on Hopkins' Homewood Campus. The Foreign Affairs Symposium (FAS) is a student-run lecture series sponsored by Johns Hopkins University.First launched in 1998, the Symposium has become a hallmark of the University and greater Baltimore community, with attendance reaching up to 1,000 people at some events.
