To input video, you need an HDMI capture device, like an Elgato Game Capture HD or similar. Note that in 27" 2009 or 2010 iMacs (which have just mini DisplayPort, not Thunderbolt) a simple mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter will allow for it.
Thunderbolt 1 and 2 ports are also Mini Display Ports, so really no reason to have a TB2 to HDMI cable. I also have a few of the dongles around, but prefer the cables as it is one less connection that has to be made and one less thing to fail.

I've had my eye on the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 (the 57-inch mini LED monitor), but I know people have faced issues getting the full resolution at 120Hz through a single Thunderbolt cable. Many have reported needing to use the HDMI 2.1 port to achieve 7680x2160 at 120Hz.

thunderbolt to h I want to connect my MACbook pro to a monitor which accepts input as HDMI. The appropriate output port on the MACbook seems to be the Thunderbolt (marked with a lightning bolt of course). So I need a suitable adapter cable for Thunderbolt to HDMI. There are several products available but confusingly they talk about MiniDisplay.
Connect Thunderbolt to HDMI display. Hello, I've recently resurrected a MacBook Pro (2011) and updated to the latest OS - High Sierra 10.13 - performed by an Apple Store. Seemed to be all ok. I want to connect a new external HDMI display. I bought two third-party connector leads which claimed to be "MiniDP/Thunderbolt to HDMI" but neither worked.
I tested to see if it was the cable which is the problem by connecting it the Thunderbolt port of a laptop supporting Windows 7 and it worked PERFECTLY on my Samsung television. Therefore, the problem lies in my Mac. When connected to the TV via the Thunderbolt-HDMI cable, a blue screen briefly appears on the Macbook.
