The original Ar10 was designed in 30.06, and used available BAR 20rd mags. Any manufactures out there willing to develop an Ar10 in the 06 round? If the guns sells for about $1500.00 it will still be about $1300 to $1600 cheaper than a Semi-BAR. A .30-06 sized AR10 using BAR mags would rock.
The 270 SAAMI specs allow higher pressure, and so higher relative muzzle velocity than 30-06 SAAMI specs, but bullet weight over rides the pressure/relative velocity difference. As an aside, a 30-06 shooting 150gr bullets produces mild recoil compared to the same 30-06 shooting 220gr bullets when the ammo is equally hot ammo pressure wise.
Horndady Superformance ammo will give you an extra hundred fps, and monolithic bullets will make a deep, wide hole through any critter in North America. Not with 180 or 200 grain ammo 308 won't. 308 is a fine caliber is fine for anything up to and including elk. 30-06 far out performs 308 on elk sized critters on up.
220gr from a 16” 30-06 is still very potent. Based on Hodgdons 15” data I would expect ~2300 fps or more from a 16”. However if you are only shooting 200 yards you may want to give lever action a second thought. 44 mag and 45/70 are good selections for that distance. Posted: 1/1/2019 5:38:59 PM EST.
Quoted: given similar bullet design, the 30-06 will have 2-2.5 times the bullet weight travelling at about 90-95% of the speed of .223. .30-06 will win. There is no magic here, just physics. That is assuming that the bullets are constructed identical with only scale difference in size, and tested in a vacuum.
An AR was the first thing that popped into my head. Those guns are $1,700 for the carbine and $2,000 for the rifle, so the Garand looks more like where I'll be landing on this one. ARCHIVED. Posted: 12/31/2011 12:40:29 PM EST. I found a beautiful bolt action rifle today. It had engraved on the top of the receiver "Carl Gustaf Stads". The stock was custom. It had a stripper clip groove on the top of the receiver for feeding. It was in 30-06 and had iron sights only.

How come nobody makes a 30-06 AR15 upper like this one: www.ultramag50.com. Have the magazine on the left side of the upper. Seems like it would be a cheap project.
For 1903 Springfield or M1917 Enfield in 30-06, I would suggest IMR-4350 or H4350 and a 168 or 175 gr. Sierra MK or Nosler CC. I would load to about 2800 fps and look for the accuracy node. It is critical with a Springfield to make sure the rifle is tight in the stock and the stock is pushing the barrel up at the end.
30-06 uses slower burning powders than a 308, and in turn, it performs better in 22" barrels. For an 18" barrel, a 308 would be a better choice. A shorter action will save a little weight, and the performance will be within 100 fps of what the 30-06 could achieve. But if the shoe fits on the rifle you're eyeing, go for it.
