The University of the Witwatersrand was named the Transvaal University College from 1906 to 1910. It was founded in 1976 as a branch of the University of Fort Hare and after the Transkei gained nominal independence in 1977, it became the University of Transkei. On 1 July 2005, the university merged with Border Technikon [1] and Eastern Cape Technikon to become the Walter Sisulu University, named after anti-apartheid activist Walter Sisulu.
Registration with the Medical and Dentists Board requires a Bachelor of Clinical Medical Practice degree [1] – a three-year program offered at the Walter Sisulu University since January 2008 [2] and now also offered at the University of Witwatersrand and University of Pretoria. [3] [4]
