At the outbreak of the Civil War, Bonham was put in charge of South Carolina's volunteer army and served with distinction. In 1862, he resigned his commission and became governor of South Carolina. In 1863, the house was sold to Confederate Secretary of the Treasury George Trenholm.
The predecessor to the Edgefield Advertiser was the Anti-Monarchist and South-Carolina Advertiser, first published by Thomas M. Davenport on May 27, 1811. After the War of 1812, Davenport sold the newspaper to Benjamin McNary who changed its name to South-Carolina Republican. In 1824, he sold the newspaper to John Lofton and Abner Landrum. [1]
Edgefield is located slightly east of the center of Edgefield County at (33.7868, -81.9278 U.S. Route 25 passes through the southwest part of the town, bypassing the center, and leads north 33 miles (53 km) to Greenwood and south 26 miles (42 km) to Augusta, Georgia.
Notable buildings include the Edgefield County Courthouse, Trinity Episcopal Church and Rectory, St. Mary's Catholic Church (designed by John R. Niernsee), Halcyon Grove, Oakley Park, Carroll Hill, Blocker House, Yarborough House, and Padgett House. [2] [3] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. [1]
