The 1977 Tournament Players Championship was a golf tournament in Florida on the PGA Tour, held March 17–20 at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, southeast of Jacksonville. The fourth Tournament Players Championship , it was the first of five consecutive at Sawgrass, which had agreed a multi-year with the PGA Tour in 1976.
The first tournament of the season was the Beck's PGA Championship at Wanderers Golf Club. Hayes shot a 62 (−8) in the third round which placed him in good position in the tournament. [1] He described it as his best round ever. [2] The round broke the course recorded by three shots.
The tournament began as the Quad Cities Open in 1971 as a "satellite event" on the PGA Tour, and became an official tour event in 1972, played in early autumn. [3] [4] [5] It moved to mid-July in 1974, [6] and Ed McMahon served as tournament host from 1975 to 1979.
