Prince William Public Library System (PWPLS) is a public library system in Virginia started in 1965. The system consists of 11 branches that include six full-service branches and five neighborhood branches across Prince William County and the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park .
The Montclair Public Library had its beginnings with the founding of the Montclair Library Association, a 30-person subscription-based organization started by Israel Crane in 1869. On April 12, 1893, citizens of Montclair voted to establish a free public library. It was housed on the second floor of Dr. John J.H. Love's office at 16 Church Street.
Fauquier County was created from western Prince William County in 1759. In 1790 Prince William County's population was 58% white; most of the remainder were enslaved African Americans. The county had been an area of tobacco plantations, but planters were changing to cultivate mixed crops due to soil exhaustion and changes in the market.
