Edward C. Walthall was born in Richmond, Virginia, on April 4, 1831. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Walthall moved to Mississippi with his family in 1841. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] He attended St. Thomas Hall in Holly Springs , studying law. [ 2 ]
During the early part of the Atlanta campaign, the 4th Louisiana Infantry was assigned to Brigadier General William Andrew Quarles' brigade, Major General Edward C. Walthall's division, Lieutenant General Leonidas Polk's corps.
He was appointed and subsequently elected to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Edward C. Walthall and served from May 31, 1898, to March 3, 1901; he was not a candidate for reelection. On September 8, 1908, Sullivan led a lynch mob which murdered a black man named Nelse Patton, who had been accused of killing a white woman.
