The Rajah Quilt is a large quilt that was created by women convicts in 1841 whilst travelling from Woolwich, England, to Hobart, Australia, using materials organised by Lydia Irving of the convict ship subcommittee of the British Ladies Society for Promoting the Reformation of Female Prisoners. The quilt was presented to Jane Franklin.
Named after the regional Tasmanian town of Westbury, the historic quilt was created by sisters Mary Hampson (26 June 1868 – 1944) and Jane Hampson (13 October 1873 – 10 April 1950), [2] possibly with the assistance of other family members such as sister Hannah (died 18 October 1952) [3] [4] over the years 1900 to 1903. Elizabeth Read (née Archer; c. 1820–1884) was an English-born prostitute who was transported to Australia. She and 179 other female convicts arrived in Hobart, Van Diemen's Land (modern-day Tasmania) in 1841 aboard the Rajah, which has since become legendary by virtue of a patchwork quilt stitched by the convicts en route, now held at the National Gallery of Australia.
