It is the end of the summer and Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Caroline (Candice Accola) need to get ready for college.Though a bit hesitant, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) says his goodbyes to Elena as she leaves for Whitmore College since neither of them wants to leave each other after their newly started relationship.
Elena sneaks into the basement getting herself in trouble before Damon appears to save her. They find Stefan and Harper and they free them. Damon goes to distract Frederick, who already got suspicious that something is going on, while Elena helps Stefan to get out. Damon fights with Frederick and two other vampires when Alaric shows up to help him.
Stefan informs Caroline (Candice Accola) of Damon's secret, and Caroline tells Elena (Nina Dobrev). Damon also is informed by Stefan that Elena, the love of his life, has compelled away all of her positive memories of him after accepting his loss. Damon attempts to meet with Elena, but Elena refuses and attempts to avoid Damon altogether.
Elena almost gets Damon to make out with her again, but they are interrupted by a phone call. Bonnie tells Elena they need to meet because she is teaching Jeremy to control his vampire hunter urges. Meanwhile, Elena and Damon go to the Gilbert Lake House to help Jeremy face some dangerous inner demons.
Sheila agrees to open the tomb as long as the rest of the vampires are burned. Elena has to earn Damon's trust back and leaves to go and find him and talk to him. She finds him at the Salvatore house and she convinces him to trust her again. Stefan, Bonnie and Sheila wait for Damon and Elena at the church ruins. Stefan brought along arsonist tools.
Enzo wants to kill Elena because he knows Damon loves and cares about her, but Elena fights back, so he snaps her neck. Stefan gets there in time to stop him before he stakes her and the two of them start to fight. Damon finds Elena unconscious and takes her home so she will be safe. He leaves her on the couch and leaves.
Damon does not want to do it but Stefan bites the girl's neck making it bleed. He pushes Damon closer to her blood and Damon cannot resist so he finally drinks from her. Elena, after hearing the whole story, realizes the reason Stefan wants to die and runs downstairs to find him but he is gone and he left his ring behind.
