Early in the early 20th century, Wellington was connected through Altus, Oklahoma with Wichita Falls, Texas through the Wichita Falls and Wellington Railway, one of the properties of the industrialist Joseph A. Kemp of Wichita Falls. In 1914, this route was leased by the since-defunct Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad. [6]
Both of these predecessor railroads were part of the "Wichita Falls Route" and were soon purchased by the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (MKT). The Hollis & Eastern was incorporated on October 15, 1958, beginning operations on the former MKT Wellington branch between Altus and Hollis on May 15, 1959.
