The academy was founded in 1902 as Castle Heights School outside of Lebanon, Tennessee. [1] [2] [3] Its founders were David Mitchell, president of Cumberland University; Isaac W. P. Buchanan, a mathematics teacher at the recently defunct Cumberland Preparatory School; Amzi W. Hooker, a resident of Lebanon; and Laban Lacy Rice, a former English instructor at the Cumberland Preparatory School.
The real progenitor of the Ohio Military Institute was Cary Academy, established in his own home on College Hill by Freeman Cary, in the year 1832. The Cary family were pioneers in this part of Ohio. The father came from New England to Cincinnati as early as 1802. A few years later he purchased a large farm on the present site of College Hill.
In 1894 the school was reorganized into the Miami Military Institute. In December 1903 a fire destroyed the original Germantown Institute building, and a new campus was completed by the start of the 1904 school year. Students at these academies are organized as cadets, and graduate with appropriate licenses from the U.S. Coast Guard and/or the U.S. Merchant Marine.While not immediately offered a commission as an officer within a service, cadets do have the opportunity to participate in commissioning programs like the Strategic Sealift Officer Program (Navy) and Maritime Academy Graduate (Coast Guard).
