It is a well-known school for its AFJROTC unit, FL-939, the Sandalwood Marching Saints, the Sandalwood Academy of Information Technology (S.A.IN.T.), AVID, the Early College program and many different athletic teams. The school opened as Sandalwood Junior-Senior High School (grades 7 through 12) on September 7, 1971.
The Duval County School Board decided on June 1, 2021, by a 5-2 vote, to rename Robert E. Lee High School "Riverside High School." The school board estimated renaming costs to be $366,302, with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Nike coming forward to pay for the change for the school's uniforms and other related items. [ 25 ]
Though Saint Leo was established as a college in 1889 and is much older than any of the other college in the Tampa Bay area, a good portion of their early history was spent as a college preparatory school.
