AusRegistry was a Melbourne, Australia based company that specialised in domain name registry services.. AusRegistry was the registry operator and wholesale provider for all commercial .au (Australian) domain names including .com.au and .net.au and the non-commercial domain names .edu.au and .gov.au - for over 16 years, from 2002 until 1 July 2018. The result of this period of collaboration was the establishment in June 1997 of a new policy development body called Australian Domain Name Administration, or ADNA [7] tasked with taking control of .au and operating the domain space for the public good.
The policy has been adopted by all ICANN-accredited registrars. It has also been adopted by certain managers of country-code top-level domains (e.g., .nu, .tv, .ws).. The policy is then applicable due to the contract between the registrar (or other registration authority in the case of a country-code top-level domain) and its customer (the domain-name holder or registrant).
The domain name was originally allocated by Jon Postel, operator of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) to Kevin Robert Elz of Melbourne University in 1986. After an approximately five-year process in the 1990s, the Internet industry created a self-regulatory body called .au Domain Administration (auDA) to operate the domain.
In 1993 the U.S. Department of Commerce, in conjunction with several public and private entities, created InterNIC to maintain a central database that contains all the registered domain names and the associated IP addresses in the U.S. (other countries maintain their own NICs (Network Information Centers) -- there is a link below that discusses Canada's system, for example).
The law of equity plays an important role in Australian contracts, and will affect which remedies may be available when a contractual promise is breached. Doctrines of importance to contract law practitioners include negligent mis-statement, [5] promissory estoppel, [6] and misleading or deceptive conduct. [7]
