Area code 231 was created in June 1999 by an area code split of area code 616, which had served the entire western half of the Lower Peninsula, extending west from the north-south line aligned with the Mackinac Bridge. 231 was carved out of the northern part.

The U.S. state of Washington has six telephone area codes. The state initially used a single area code until it was divided in 1957 with the creation of area code 509 to serve Eastern Washington. In 1995, 206 was split again to serve just the Puget Sound region after area code 360 was created for the remainder of Western Washington.

In the late 1970s, the northern parts of area code 418 served by Sotel and Bell along James, Hudson and Ungava Bays and Hudson Strait, as well as the eastern Northwest Territories, were assigned to area code 819 as exchanges in that area began to receive direct distance dialling.

Area codes 870 and 327 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for southern, eastern, and most of northern Arkansas. 870 was created on April 14, 1997, in a split from area code 501, Arkansas's original area code of 1947, and 327 was added as part of an overlay complex in 2024.
