Sabiha Gürayman was the first Turkish woman to engage in the game of volleyball, which was introduced in Turkey in the 1910s. As a young woman Gürayman founded and played for the Fenerbahçe women's volleyball team, having previously played in the men's team of that club.
It is often regarded as the best professional women's volleyball league in the world. Its clubs have obtained significant successes in European and other international competitions. Eczacıbaşı are the most successful club, having won 16 championships so far. [1] It succeeded the former Turkish Women's Volleyball Championship (1956–1984).
Eczacıbaşı has won more national championships than any other women's volleyball team in Turkey, with 27 Turkish League Championships [2] under its belt since it entered the league in 1968. In the 1972–1973 season, the team began to set its first record of consecutive wins, winning 17 Turkish League titles in a row.
