It is in the City of Brussels. The embassy initially opened in 1919. The embassy was closed in 1940 after the German invasion of Belgium, and it reopened in 1944. The first predecessor of the current mission was the US diplomatic mission to the European Coal and Steel Community in Luxembourg, which opened in 1956. In 1961, the US Mission to the European Communities was established in Brussels, which later became the United States Mission to the European Union, upon the latter's establishment in 1993. [1]
Since that time, a long line of distinguished envoys have represented American interests in Belgium. These diplomats included men and women whose career paths would lead them to become Secretary of States (Hugh S. Legaré), Secretary of Commerce (Charles Sawyer) and Chair of the Federal Trade Commission (Joseph E. Davies).
Since virtually each embassy now has an RSO, the term is largely anachronistic. In some cases, an RSO may regionally oversee security at consulates and other U.S. presence facilities from an embassy within a country. At an embassy, the RSO reports directly to the deputy chief of mission, who in turn reports directly to the ambassador.
Brussels is unique in that it is not only the seat of the Belgian Government, but also of the European Commission, which is the executive wing of the European Union to which countries accredit representatives, and of the NATO. Thus, a country can maintain up to three missions in Brussels: one to Belgium, one to the EU, and one to the NATO.

Furthermore, the consular services in Brussels and the consular posts abroad act as a public service and are responsible, for example, for issuing Belgian identity cards or passports, processing visa applications or legalising official documents. Another type of service is provided by the National Security Authority (ANS/NVO).
