Votes in an election are often represented using bar charts or pie charts, often labeled with the corresponding percentage or number of votes. [1] The apportionment of seats between the parties in a legislative body has a defined set of rules, unique to each body. As an example, the Senate of Virginia says,

The advanced Composition bar template can be used to show a composition bar split into different colours. It's intended use is on election articles to show the share of the vote in a given division/constituency/ward, but it can be used as a general composition bar, or as a more comprehensive progress bar.

This template is designed to make it easier to read tables where the name of a political party appears as one of the columns. Rather than a table where party names appear on a background colour, which can provide poor accessibility, this template creates two columns, one with a coloured bar and one with the party name, both populated from the political party module).
