Henderson County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 82,150. [1] The county seat is Athens. [2] The county is named in honor of James Pinckney Henderson, the first attorney general of the Republic of Texas, and secretary of state for the republic. The East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society "ETABS" (over 100 acres) is an arboretum and collection of botanical gardens and historical buildings located at 1601 Patterson Road, Athens, Texas in the United States. It is open daily, an admission fee is charged. ETABS is a not-for-profit recognized by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3).
History. Cross Roads is at the junction of Farm roads 59 and 3441 in southwestern Henderson County. The town was founded in 1846 by the Reverend Hezekiah Mitcham and his wife Mary Clarke Mitcham, who had come from Marengo County, Alabama, according to that county's 1830 Census. The earliest settlement was called Science Hill.
