NASA plans to grow plants in space to help feed astronauts and to provide psychological benefits for long-term space flight. [7] In 2017, aboard ISS in one plant growth device, the 5th crop of Chinese cabbage ( Brassica rapa ) from it included an allotment for crew consumption, while the rest was saved for study. [ 8 ]
Cabbage growing in a Veggie unit [1]. The Vegetable Production System (Veggie) is a plant growth system developed and used by NASA in space environments. The purpose of Veggie is to provide a self-sufficient and sustainable food source for astronauts as well as a means of recreation and relaxation through therapeutic gardening. [2]
The study of plant response in space environments is another subject of astrobotany research. In space, plants encounter unique environmental stressors not found on Earth including microgravity, ionizing radiation, and oxidative stress. [23] Experiments have shown that these stressors cause genetic alterations in plant metabolism pathways.
Essentially, the space farm turns the spaceship into an artificial ecosystem with a hydrological cycle and nutrient recycling. [4] [5] In addition to maintaining a shelf-life and reducing total mass, the ability to grow food in space would help reduce the vitamin gap in astronaut's diets and provide fresh food with improved taste and texture.
Since the release of the initial 1989 study, titled A study of interior landscape plants for indoor air pollution abatement: An Interim Report, [6] further research has been done including a 1993 paper [7] and 1996 book [8] by B. C. Wolverton, the primary researcher on the original NASA study, that listed additional plants and focused on the removal of specific chemicals.
NASA space foods are packaged in retort pouches [13] or employ freeze drying. [11] They are also packaged in sealed containers which fit into trays to keep them in place. The trays include straps on the underside, allowing astronauts to attach the tray to an anchor point such as their legs or a wall surface and include clips for retaining a ...
[1] [2] The 2005 NASA Authorization Act designated the American segment of the International Space Station as a national laboratory with the goal of increasing the use of the ISS by other federal agencies and the private sector. [3] Research on the ISS improves knowledge about the effects of long-term space exposure on the human body.
The Space Station Explorers program includes opportunities for students to launch their own projects into space. [16] Some of the Space Station Explorer experiments have allowed students to observe genetic changes in astronauts' DNA, [17] learn how bacteria grows differently in space, [8] and track the development of tadpoles into four-legged ...
