The screenplay was written by Alice Childress, based on her novel of the same name. It was shot on location in South Central Los Angeles. [1] It was Nelson's last film before his death.
Alice Childress is also known for her young adult novels, among which are Those Other People (1989) and A Hero Ain't Nothin' but a Sandwich (1973).
