Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major was in most parts only empty brilliance and in other parts salon music. The Hungarian Rhapsodies were to be rejected because of the triviality of their melodies. It is obvious that Bartók himself did not like much of Liszt's piano works. Taking his point of view, the agreeable part was very small.
