January 21 – Joseph Conrad achieves his first popular success as the New York Herald begins serializing his novel Chance. He broke off with it in 1906, but sold the rights to the unfinished work in June 1911. Conrad continues to work on the book, while the first chapters appear weekly in the Herald. The Cruise of the Snark (1911) [1] is a non-fictional, illustrated book by Jack London chronicling his sailing adventure in 1907 across the south Pacific in his ketch the Snark. Accompanying London on this voyage was his wife Charmian London and a small crew.
The first part of the novel [3] takes place in the Yukon Territory in 1893 and in Alaska. [4] The second part of the novel takes place in San Francisco and the San Francisco Bay Area . [ 4 ] " Burning Daylight", the main character, is partially based upon the life of Oakland entrepreneur "Borax" Smith , [ 5 ] but named for Elam Harnish (1866-1941).
Jack London is not mentioned. However, the director has said that the film is "loosely based on a true story that became a Jack London story." [3] H. P. Lovecraft owned a copy of The Star Rover, and Edward Guimont has proposed that it was an influence on his and E. Hoffmann Price's 1933 story "Through the Gates of the Silver Key". [4]
