Weakley County was created in October 1823 from some of the land that the Chickasaw people ceded to the United States in the Treaty of 1818.The county was named after Colonel Robert Weakley, a member of the House of Representatives, a speaker of the State Senate, and the man commissioned to treat (negotiate) with the Chickasaw.
He received an Artium Baccalaureus degree in 1897 from Bethel College (now Bethel University) in McKenzie, Tennessee and read law in 1899. He entered private practice in Dresden, Tennessee from 1900 to 1905, during which time he was also a newspaper editor, teacher and a Master in Chancery for the Tennessee Chancery Court in Weakley County. Gardner was founded in 1856 by its namesake, Colonel John Almus Gardner.He was the first president of the Nashville and Northwestern Railroad (a predecessor to the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway) and he owned the land on which the town was established.

Granville Lipscomb Jr. would become a leader in the Lebanon Church of Christ founded in 1879 in Weakley County, Tennessee. [8] Lipscomb was married to Margaret Zellner on July 22, 1862. Only one child was born to them. Little Zellner died at the age of 9 months of dehydration while teething. They reared, however, several foster children.
