The Uganda Program on Cancer and Infectious Diseases (UPCID), established in 2004, is a joint program between Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle and the Uganda Cancer Institute. [ 16 ] [ 17 ] [ 18 ] The program works to understand and treat infection-related cancers in the United States and abroad.
Mbarara Regional Cancer Centre (MRCC) is a public, specialized, tertiary care medical facility owned by the Uganda Ministry of Health. The facility is located along the Mbarara-Kabale Road , in the central business district of the city of Mbarara , on the campus of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital .
The establishment of the centre was informed by the increased patient burden at Uganda Cancer Institute, in Kampala, the country's capital city, where 4,500 to 6,000 new cancer patients are registered annually. As of May 2016, approximately 60,000 new cancer patients are diagnosed annually in Uganda.
IHK became operational in 2000, and was founded by Dr. Ian Clarke, a general practitioner and tropical medicine specialist, born in Northern Ireland.The hospital initially opened at a smaller premises in Old Kampala, before relocating to its current home in 2004.
In 2002, he left Uganda for Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States, to pursue a two-year Fellowship in hematology and oncology at Case Western Reserve University. After graduation in 2004, he returned to Uganda. Later, he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree by the Karolinska Institute in Solna, Stockholm County in Sweden. [1] [2]
Victoria Walusansa-Abaliwano (née Victoria Walusansa), is a Ugandan physician and oncologist, who works as the Deputy Director of the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI), a cancer treatment and research institution, based in Kampala, Uganda and serving the countries of the African Great Lakes area. In 1996, the group acquired the company Uganda Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (UPL, manufacturer of medicine in Uganda, from the government in 1993), and sold 30% of it to Libyan investors in 2016. [4] From 1990 to 2016, the group invested over $75 million in development.
The Washington Cancer Institute opened on May 9, 1992. [1] Under the leadership of Dr. Sandra Swain , [ 2 ] the Cancer Institute diagnosed more than 2,305 new cases during fiscal year 2007. There were more than 79,720 outpatient visits and more than 2,334 inpatient admissions during that period.
