Illuvium is material displaced across a soil profile, from one layer to another one, by the action of rainwater. The removal of material from a soil layer is called eluviation. The transport of the material may be either mechanical or chemical. The process of deposition of illuvium is termed illuviation. [1]
A soil test is a laboratory or in-situ analysis to determine the chemical, physical or biological characteristics of a soil. Possibly the most widely conducted soil tests are those performed to estimate the plant-available concentrations of nutrients in order to provide fertilizer recommendations in agriculture.
The Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) is a soil classification system used in engineering and geology to describe the texture and grain size of a soil. The classification system can be applied to most unconsolidated materials, and is represented by a two-letter symbol. Each letter is described below (with the exception of Pt):
Alluvium – Loose soil or sediment that is eroded and redeposited in a non-marine setting; Colluvium – Loose, unconsolidated sediments deposited at the base of a hillslope; Eluvium – End product of rock weathering; Giant current ripples – Depositional forms in channeled scablands; Illuvium – Material displaced across a soil profile
