The Topps team came up with the idea to print a series of football cards consisting of legends from the early days of football, plus a few recently retired superstars of the 1950s. Included in this set were names such as Jim Thorpe, The Four Horsemen (1924 Notre Dame backfield), Knute Rockne, and Otto Graham, just to name a few.
The first variation of cards were aptly titled Slam Attax, a play on words of the previously popular football trading card game Match Attax (also made by Topps). The first set was released in late 2008 in the U.K., and it was then later released in the United States in mid-2009.
The 1982 Topps Factory Set is rare due to J.C. Penney's failure to sell them. J.C. Penney factory sets were available in 1982 in a color box and 1983 (SKU 672–1203), 1984 (SKU 672–1641), and 1985 (SKU 672–2029) in brown boxes. From 1986 to 1992, Topps factory sets came in two designs, Retail (or Christmas) and Hobby dealer.
Topps brought back the gold cup symbol on the 1987 cards. In 2000, a special 10-card insert set of Topps All-Star Rookies was included in packs of the regular issue. Topps combined a list of All-Star names and holographic foil design to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Topps All-Star Rookie team.
