The Physical Fitness Assessment consists of a Body Composition Assessment (BCA) and a Physical Readiness Test (PRT), which includes a timed cardio event consisting of 1.5-mile (2.4 km) run/treadmill or a 500 yd (460 m) swim (or an alternate cardio consisting of 12-minutes on a stationary bike), timed curl-ups, and timed sit-ups.
For this test, Marines choose to either perform pull-ups or push-ups. However, the maximum score is only attainable if pull-ups are chosen. The pull-ups may be done with either an overhand (pronated) grip or an underhand (supinated) "chin-up" grip.
Unlike the PFA which could be done en-masse, with many parts the new tests takes more time and has the soldiers standing around waiting testing. Even the loaded march has been made more complicated with the first part being a 4km march with weight (Royal Engineers carry 40kg), and then the next part a 2km best effort (RE carry 25kg).
